Tail wagging tips to enjoy the holiday season with your new pup 🐶🎄

The holiday season is a busy time of year with the hustle and bustle of joyful greetings and end of year meetings. If you are adding a puppy, older dog or rescue pet into the mix, it can be stressful not just for you but also your new furry family member.

Here is a list of tips from the maker of Australia’s most stylish, sustainable and architecturally inspired pet furniture The Paws Room to help keep your pooch calm and happy as he or she learns the ropes of their new home life.

The Paws Room is on a mission to bring lasting harmony for hounds and homes and has partnered with Happy Hearts Happy Paws charity to support their programs for people and rescue animals.

  • Make the most of having everyone at home for the holidays and help your puppy with the transition to a new life. Look out for behaviours like panting, pacing, excessive barking, aggression or destruction. You might think your puppy is excited, but it can be a sign of stress and anxiety.

  • Clear your diary to spend some quiet time with your furry friend. Avoid hosting a big event and don't stay out too often or for too long. Dogs can experience anxiety from being left alone, separated from their family members or moving into a new home.

  • Careful with the decorations - pet proof your house! Decorations like tinsel, ribbons and baubles can lead to serious intestinal obstructions, requiring surgery. Christmas lights can also pose serious electrocution when chewed by your curious puppy! Also, keep the holiday treats boxed away, such as chocolates, cooked bones, grapes and raisins to name a few.

  • Beware of doggy play dates until your puppy is fully vaccinated for potential illnesses and parasites. You see, puppies receive a C4 vaccination to keep them safe from parvovirus, canine distemper, canine hepatitis and canine parainfluenza. At the second or third vaccination, puppies receive Bordetella (known as kennel cough). Your pup will be fully protected and safe to meet other doggies 10 days after their final vaccination. Speak to your vet about annual booster shots.

  • When you have visitors, give pup a calm place to have quiet time, such as in a separate room and/or in a crate. Many dog trainers and vets advocate crates as a comforting and safe space for training puppies into adulthood so they can develop a lasting ability (and associated place) to self-soothe.

Besides puppies, older pets also benefit greatly from having a sanctuary to go to when there are new people and festivities in the house, which can create over-excitement and stress. For a step-by-step guide on how to correctly crate train your puppy, click here for a video demonstration with dog trainer Justin Palazzo-Orr from Happy Paws Happy Hearts.

“There are many benefits to crate training a dog, may it be a puppy or recently adopted dog. It helps them establish a safe space they can go to, somewhere familiar or to get away from other people or animals while they are still getting used to them,” says Justin.
